Why Are Heart Tumors So Rare?
A new study published in the journal Science reveals that the constant mechanical movement of the heartbeat may be the main factor protecting the heart from tumor development. This discovery explains why primary heart cancer is extremely rare—found in less than 1% of human autopsies—while secondary tumors (metastasized from other parts) can occur in up to 18% of cases. The long-standing medical mystery now has an answer.
The Mechanical Defense of the Heartbeat
Led by researcher Serena Zacchigna from the University of Trieste, Italy, the team proposes that the heart's continuous beating creates an unfavorable environment for cancer cell proliferation and engraftment. Unlike most other organs, heart cells are subjected to constant mechanical stress, which may prevent disordered cell growth and act as a natural barrier.
Experiments Confirm: Beating Hearts Suppress Tumors
The team conducted detailed experiments using genetically modified mice. They transplanted additional hearts into the neck region of these mice; the transplanted hearts received blood supply but did not beat. Then, cancer cells were injected into both the transplanted (inactive) hearts and the original (active) hearts. Two weeks later, the results were clear:
- Inactive hearts: Tumors spread quickly, replacing a large portion of healthy cells.
- Beating hearts: Only about 20% of the tissue was compromised by cancer cells, showing significant resistance.
Additionally, in lab-cultured heart tissue, cancer cell proliferation was only inhibited when calcium was added to make the tissue beat. Cancer cells tended to concentrate only in the outermost layers, confirming the mechanical protection.
Future Implications for Treatment
This discovery opens new avenues for cancer therapy. The team is exploring whether mechanical forces similar to the heartbeat could be used to stop tumor growth in other tissues, such as skin and breast. Furthermore, understanding how conditions like hypertension (which increase pressure on the heart) relate to cancer risk may provide new clues for treating both cardiovascular disease and cancer.
General Warning Signs for Early Cancer Detection
Although primary heart cancer is rare, early detection of any cancer is critical. Be aware of these symptoms:
- Unexplained weight loss: May signal stomach, lung, or pancreatic cancer.
- Persistent skin changes: Unusual lumps in the breast, neck, armpit, or groin.
- Persistent cough: Lasting more than four weeks, especially with shortness of breath or blood.
- Mole changes: Changes in size, color, or shape, or if it starts peeling, bleeding, or oozing.
