Skipping Sleep May Pack on Pounds Faster Than You Think, New Study Finds

A Columbia University study found that losing just 90 minutes of sleep per night led to weight gain and larger waistlines in adults over six weeks. Sleep deprivation disrupts metabolic hormones, especially affecting menopausal women. Experts urge treating sleep as a vital sign of health.

Skipping Sleep May Pack on Pounds Faster Than You Think, New Study Finds

Study Reveals Direct Link Between Sleep Loss and Weight Gain

A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine by Columbia University found that adults who lost about 90 minutes of sleep per night for six weeks gained roughly one pound on average and had slightly larger waistlines compared to periods when they got enough rest. The study compared six weeks of adequate sleep with six weeks of restricted sleep.

Why Does Sleep Deprivation Lead to Weight Gain?

Sleep plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and appetite hormones. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts the balance of hormones like leptin and ghrelin, making people feel hungrier and more likely to consume high-calorie foods. Additionally, lack of sleep can lower basal metabolic rate, making it harder for the body to burn calories.

Menopausal Women Need Extra Attention

Dr. Somi Javaid, an Ohio-based OB-GYN, noted that sleep problems become more common during menopause, a time when women's metabolism is least able to absorb the hit. 'We are destroying women's sleep at the exact life stage when their metabolism is least able to absorb the hit, then telling them to eat less and exercise more,' she said. The American Heart Association now recognizes sleep as one of its 'Life's Essential 8' and recommends adults get 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Tips to Improve Sleep Quality

  • Keep your bedroom temperature around 65°F (18.3°C) to promote falling asleep.
  • Reduce screen time before bed to avoid blue light disrupting melatonin production.
  • Try mouth taping to encourage nasal breathing and improve sleep quality.
  • Establish a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
