5 Health Essentials You Must Pack for Your Next Flight: Nasal Spray, Eye Drops, Sunscreen, Compression Socks and More

Why You Need a Flight Health Kit?

Whether it's a toothbrush, a makeup essential, or an adapter plug, creating a checklist in advance helps you avoid last-minute travel disasters. Pharmacist and digital creator Geeta shared her 'ultimate unsexy flight health kit' on Instagram, and we reached out to medical experts to understand the science behind each item.

1. Nasal Spray: Combat Cabin Dryness

Dr Shama Kovale, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, explained that nasal sprays containing active ingredients like xylometazoline or oxymetazoline work by constricting swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages, providing rapid relief from congestion. Saline nasal sprays, on the other hand, are the safest option—they keep nasal passages moist, prevent crusting, and are generally free of significant side effects.

2. Eye Drops: Relieve Dry Eyes

Cabin humidity is extremely low, and prolonged screen time or reading can lead to dry, irritated eyes. Dr Kovale recommends using lubricating eye drops regularly, especially in dry environments like flights or when spending long hours in front of screens.

3. Sunscreen: SPF 50 Is a Must

'SPF 50 means protection against harmful UV rays, which are the primary cause of premature ageing, pigmentation, and skin cancers,' said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics. She reminds travellers to moisturise before boarding, as cabin air is drying and can damage skin. Reapply sunscreen every few hours, especially when spending more time outdoors during travel.

4. Compression Socks: Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis

Dr Narander Singla, Lead Consultant – Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, explained that wearing compression socks during long-haul flights can be highly beneficial. 'These special socks gently squeeze your legs, helping blood flow better and keeping your legs from feeling tired or swollen,' he said. More importantly, they lower the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)—a condition where blood clots form in deep veins, usually in the legs.

5. Additional Tips

  • Carry a moisturiser to combat the drying effects of cabin air on your skin.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol to stay hydrated.
  • Get up and move around periodically, doing simple stretches to promote circulation.
