Researchers put 114 pain-free adults through a boring video, a funny one, or a neutral control, then pressed on four muscles with a device that records the exact pressure at which sensation turns into pain. Boredom lowered that threshold at every site tested. Humor pushed it back up at two of them.

The four sites were the right and left trapezius and the right and left tibialis anterior.

Results showed that boredom significantly lowered pressure pain thresholds at all four locations, with large effect sizes. Induced humor significantly raised thresholds at the right and left trapezius, with moderate effect sizes. The authors concluded that boredom increases sensitivity to pain in healthy people.

The Brain Has a Volume Knob for Pain, and Mood Turns It

Pain is not a fixed readout of tissue damage. Signals traveling up from the body get modulated on the way, and the brain sends signals back down that can amplify or dampen them. That system — the descending nociceptive modulatory pathway — is the mechanism the researchers were probing.

It also matters that the outcome measured was a pressure pain threshold in a laboratory, not pain as anyone experiences it in daily life. Pressure algometry is a standard, reproducible research tool, but the point at which a probe on the shoulder starts to hurt is not the same thing as a migraine, a flare of arthritis, or postsurgical pain.

Nobody Should Swap a Pain Plan for a Comedy Special

Every participant was pain-free at enrollment. That single design choice determines how far the results can travel. The researchers wrote that whether the effect extends to clinical pain populations should be examined in future research. That is a call for more work, not a treatment recommendation.

The context is not trivial, though. CDC data found that 24.3% of U.S. adults had chronic pain in 2023, and 8.5% had pain that frequently limited their life or work activities. If ordinary shifts in mental state reliably nudge pain sensitivity in either direction, that is a lever worth understanding — particularly for people in settings that are structurally boring, such as long hospital stays and rehabilitation.

For now, the honest summary is narrower and more interesting than the obvious headline. The finding is not that laughter is medicine. It is that boredom — a state nobody thinks of as a physiological event — appears to turn the dial the wrong way.
