Major Change for Wegovy: New Single-Dose Weight Loss Injection Pen Now Available

UK regulators have approved a new single-dose injection pen for Wegovy (semaglutide) for adult patients with obesity (BMI ≥30). This 7.2mg single-dose pen simplifies the weekly maintenance dose administration, replacing the previous method requiring three 2.4mg injections on the same day, aiming to improve treatment convenience and adherence.

A New Option for Weight Loss Treatment: Wegovy Introduces Single-Dose Pen

Weight management has been a topic of significant interest in recent years. With the growing popularity of GLP-1 receptor agonist weight-loss injections like semaglutide (Wegovy), millions worldwide have turned to these medications for help. Recently, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved a significant change, offering a more convenient new administration option for some Wegovy users.

The Core Change: From "Three Shots" to "One Shot"

Since January 2026, the maximum weekly maintenance dose of Wegovy was authorized to increase to 7.2 mg. However, prior to this change, patients had to use the standard 2.4 mg injection pen three times on the same day to achieve this dose, a process that could be cumbersome.

As of April 14, 2026, this has changed. The MHRA has approved a new single-dose 7.2 mg semaglutide (Wegovy) injection pen. This means eligible patients can now administer their weekly 7.2 mg maintenance dose with just one injection.

Who is Eligible for the New Pen?

It is important to note that this new option is not for all Wegovy users. According to the approval:

  • Eligible Patients: Adult patients with obesity who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher.
  • Not Eligible:
    • Wegovy patients with a BMI below 30 kg/m².
    • Patients using Wegovy primarily to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (even if their BMI qualifies).

These non-eligible groups will need to continue with their regular dosing regimens.

Features and Benefits of the New Device

The newly approved pen is designed to enhance the user experience:

  • Single Administration: Consolidates three injections into one, significantly simplifying the process.
  • Automatic Dosing Mechanism: Features a built-in needle with a needle cover.
  • Safety Lock: Locks automatically after use to prevent reuse.

Sebnem Avsar Tuna, UK General Manager at Novo Nordisk, stated: "The approval of this new single-dose device provides an additional administration option for people in the UK who are prescribed the 7.2 mg once-weekly maintenance dose of Wegovy. We welcome the MHRA’s decision and will continue to work with healthcare professionals and partners to support its introduction in line with local prescribing arrangements."

Important Usage Notes and Safety

Wegovy treatment typically starts at a dose of 0.25 mg once weekly. Under the guidance of a healthcare professional, the dose is gradually increased every four weeks until an effective maintenance dose is reached (up to 7.2 mg weekly). Patients should not adjust their dose on their own.

The MHRA emphasizes that they will continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of Wegovy, as they do with all medicines. Patients who suspect they are experiencing a side effect should talk to their doctor, pharmacist, or nurse and report it directly via the Yellow Card scheme website or app.

The new pen is expected to become available to users within four to six weeks of approval. This change aims to improve long-term obesity management in adults by enhancing dosing convenience and potentially improving treatment adherence.
