Malaria-Free Certification: 10th Country Globally

According to Daily News Egypt, the Ministry of Health announced on World Malaria Day that Egypt has maintained its malaria-free status for the second consecutive year, reinforcing a major public health milestone. Egypt is the 10th country globally to receive official malaria-free certification from the World Health Organization (WHO), in line with the WHO Global Malaria Strategy 2016–2030.

Surveillance and Testing Data

Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the achievement reflects effective science-based planning backed by strong political commitment, with ongoing efforts to protect public health. Radi Hammad, head of preventive medicine, reported that over 58,000 samples tested under the national surveillance system returned negative results. Authorities also investigated 244 imported cases and screened more than 6,500 contacts, with no evidence of local transmission. Additionally, around 19,000 blood samples were tested for filariasis, with no infections recorded; affected individuals received treatment and follow-up home visits.

Tackling Climate Challenges

Deputy Health Minister Amr Kandil noted that Egypt is implementing an integrated plan to strengthen epidemiological and vector surveillance systems, especially in light of climate-related challenges that could alter disease transmission patterns. These measures aim to reduce malaria incidence and mortality by at least 90%, aligning with WHO targets.

Sustained Prevention Efforts

Egypt's success relies not only on rigorous testing but also on continuous public health interventions and cross-sector collaboration. The ministry calls on the public to remain vigilant and support preventive measures such as vaccination and vector control to safeguard the hard-won malaria-free status.
